Jaipur

Highlights:

* Amber Fort - Our taxi drove up the fort as lines of elephants also headed in the same direction. After our visit to the hall of mirrors, gardens, pavilions, and slowly approached the exit, several boys tried to sell mini elephants to us, and one was especially persistent... 5 for 10, 5 for 5, 6 for 5, 20 for 10... no, not rupees, he wanted dollars!

*Jantar Mantar - By 4pm, we had to choose one from they museums as they all close at 4:30pm. Jike voted for this medieval observatory, and as expected, he had to hire a guide. By now our negotiation skills have also improved significantly through trial and error; however, before we even started asking for a discount off of the 100 rupee published price, the guide (an university student) noted that the price listed in lonely planet is 150 rupees, but he honors the published price. He's hired! Someone like him who knows his market, is aware of the earning potentials, and knows the value of tourists' time, deserves at least that much!

* Rajasthani - Famed as the most colorful state in India, Rajasthan has a rich and vibrant cultural heritage. The Rajasthani is a folk culture village where many performances are held simultaneously. Though a bit touristy, we still enjoyed our visit tremendously. Cathy was "dragged" on stage to dance, then solicited for tip. Jike got a camel ride, while Cathy opted for the elephant. As for the traditional meal, we conveniently had it during the power outages (the dining section had priority for backup generators :)...
